ALETTE SIMMONS

THE NUDE WORKS

Alette Simmons-Jimenez works in a variety of media "...starting with a basic idea and pulling from stimuli close at home.  The subjects are chosen for their strong personal relevancy.  Ideas are cut from memory and pasted together seeking a visual harmony, and creating becomes understood as 'thought.'  An ordered, calculated rendering of a recognizable image is balanced by a running accident of paint or an image intuitively overlaid, breaking down the first.  The works are abstract in composition, realistic in form, and surreal in content.  Striving to surpass the limits of art on a pictorial level, I hope to move and satisfy viewers in a heightened way by surprising their expectations, by conforming to order, even as I jar it."   Alette's primary focus is painting, experimental video, and installation art with mixed-media constructions.  Working with architects and designers, she has created and installed seven large-scale, site-specific works.

Alette's works have been exhibited in the Dominican Republic,  France, and Honduras; and in Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan,  Nebraska, and Washington, DC, in the United States, and are held in public and corporate collections.  Her numerous awards and distinctions include Judges' Choice Award, Best in Show, First Prize, Diploma of Recognition, and Individual Artist Fellowships.

Born in Madison, Wisconsin, Alette Simmons-Jimenez spent her youth living between the United States and Europe.  After graduating with a B.F.A. from Newcomb College of Tulane University, New Orleans, Louisiana, in 1975, she relocated to the Dominican Republic and began working as a full time artist.  Eighteen years later, seeking more challenge and opportunities for her work, she returned to the United States.  She has been living in Miami, Florida, since 1993.

Her numerous awards and distinctions include Judges' Choice Award, Best in Show, First Prize, Diploma of Recognition, and Individual Artist Fellowships.

Ureña Rib has seen his work exhibited around the World and holds a prominent position on the Art scene in his own country, but he admits to be particularly drawn to Montreal, which he visits annually. Renting a studio in the downtown Belgo Building, he immerses himself enthusiastically in the creative and diverse atmosphere of Montreal producing here his works.
